This website has changed its name from mastodonserver.ca to thesocialweb.ca. I wanted to make it clear that all instances and servers on the growing Open Social Web or “Fediverse” were welcome to have their server listed here for people to find.
What is the Social Web? It’s the opposite of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and all those other places that claim to be “social networks” but are really closed boxes that lock you into *their* spaces. The Social Web and Fediverse are spaces that allow you to build communities, while still being connected to the world, if you choose. It also allows you to chose where you are based. Canada? the USA? the World? It’s freedom, for social.
So that’s it. The name has been changed! The old name will still redirect to this page but please ‘update your bookmarks’ (like it’s 2005!?) and refresh your Fediverse feeds! The name also affects this site’s presence on the Fediverse.. from now on it should be reachable by searching for @directory@theosocialweb.ca.
If anyone would like to suggest or design a logo to go along with this name, I’m open to suggestions! But be warned, this is a zero-money, volunteer situation! :+)
